Corps Crane Barge for Lock Maintenance
Sault Ste. Marie, MI
The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers purchased a Flexifloat® Series S-70 spud barge to support a 330-ton crane used for year-round maintenance of their Soo Lock and Dam facility in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The 70’ x 120’ x 7’, raked spud barge is designed to support a 770,000-lb Manitowoc MLC 300 Series 3 crawler crane. A hydraulic pumping unit and winches allow for remote operation of the 40-foot-long spuds. End Rakes located on one end of the assembly help to reduce hull drag when relocating the barge and working in high water current locations.
