Charter Contracting Co. Removes Contaminated Material

Flexifloats support dredging operations on superfund site

Rhode Island

This Superfund Site in Rhode Island spans 500 acres along a river and has been impacted by waste disposal activities from the 1950s through the late 1980s. Charter Contracting Company is actively restoring approximately one mile of riverbank along the site’s western and southern boundaries.

Using a Komatsu PC600 with a clamshell attachment mounted on a 40’ x 70’ S-70 spud barge, Charter removes 400–500 cubic yards of contaminated material daily. The dredged material is transferred to 40’ x 60’ S-70 transport barges, which are ferried to shore and offloaded by land-based excavators for subsequent handling and transported to a designated disposal facility.
