Flexifloats support Arkansas Scour Repair

Kiewit performs scour remediation across six counties

Arkansas

Scour on bridge piers is the leading cause of bridge failures. That is why the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) has a dedicated scour team that routinely checks and monitors bridges vulnerable to scour. When Kiewit was awarded the ARDOT Scour Repair project they turned to Flexifloat to support their remediation operation. The modularity of the Flexifloats allowed Kiewit to efficiently move assemblies to different locations and change configurations as needed at different sites.

Since scour repairs were being performed under existing bridges, Kiewit needed to be able to float low in the water to allow their operating machines to work underneath a low overhead. Flexifloat came up with a configuration using their shallow hull H50 Series that would support a CAT 335 excavator driving sheet pile, placing stone, and performing light hook work. The need also arose for a small pedestal crane to be mounted to the Flexifloats for placing materials in the water. Flexifloat sold some of their H50 lock assemblies so Kiewit could have a custom pedestal crane attachment fabricated which would lock right up to the Flexifloat assembly.

Kiewit also utilized a 40’ x 60’ x 5’ S50 Flexifloat assembly to support a CAT 335 excavator handling bundles of small armor stone being placed by a diver. 30’ x 40’ x 5’ S50 material barges accommodated the need for transports to get sheet pile, armor stone, and other materials from shore out to the scour repair sites.
