continental heavy civil elevates for driving sheet pile
Casey Key, FL
When tasked with driving sheet piles along the shallow tidal coastline of Casey Key, FL, Continental Heavy Civil turned to Flexifloat for a Self-Elevating Platform (SEP). The SEP was required to support a Kobelco CK1100G crawler crane operating a vibratory hammer over the area’s striking turquoise waters.
The Flexifloat SEP allowed Continental Heavy Civil to float the platform into position during high tide and then elevate it out of the water, enabling continued operations even as the tide receded. Elevating the platform above the ocean waves also provided a stable working surface—crucial for precise sheet pile installation.
Flexifloat SEPs have been reliably used around the world since the 1970s, with some of the original platforms still in service. Today’s models are equipped with a modern hydraulic power unit (HPU), powered by a low-emission Tier 4 diesel engine. These HPUs drive the elevating spudwells using environmentally friendly hydraulic fluid—offering contractors peace of mind when working in sensitive environments like the Florida coastline.
